What is SEO and how does Google find your website?

You have a website, but customers can't find it on Google? This article is for business owners and those getting ready to launch their first website. Below, based on Google Search Central's official guides, we explain in plain language what SEO is, how Google finds and shows pages, and what is important to pay attention to at the start.

What is SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the work of helping search engines better understand the content on your website. This definition is based on Google's SEO Starter Guide.

The same guide makes two important points:

  • There is no "secret" that automatically puts a site in first place — Google says so itself.
  • The effect of some SEO changes may become visible within a few hours, while others may take several months.

In other words, SEO is not a "button" you press once, but consistent, patient work.

How Google finds your website: 3 stages

According to Google's guide to how Search works, Google Search works in three stages:

  1. Crawling. Using automated programs called crawlers, Google downloads text, images and videos from pages it has found on the internet.
  2. Indexing. Google analyzes the downloaded content and stores it in its index.
  3. Serving search results. The page is shown in search results in response to users' searches.

There is an important nuance here: not every page goes through all of these stages.

Google does not guarantee that any page will be crawled, indexed or shown in results. Google also does not accept payment to crawl a site more often or to rank it higher. This refers to ordinary (organic) search results, not ads. So be cautious about offers that promise a specific position on Google.

Sitemaps and robots.txt: show the robots the right way

What is a sitemap?

As Google explains, a sitemap is a file where you provide search engines with information about the pages, videos and other files on your site. But having a sitemap does not guarantee that everything in it will be crawled and indexed.

What is robots.txt for?

A robots.txt file tells search engine crawlers which URLs on your site they can access. However, Google clearly states that this file is not a way to hide a page from Google.

If you don't want a page to appear on Google, use noindex or protect the page with a password.

How do you write a title and meta description?

The headline of a search result is called a title link. Google generates it automatically, mainly using the page's title element and the headings on the page. Google's recommendations:

  • every page should have its own title element;
  • the title text should be descriptive and concise;
  • don't repeat the same words over and over;
  • keep the brand name short.

The short description in a search result is called a snippet. Google creates this description mainly from the page's own content, but sometimes uses the meta description if it describes the page more accurately. That is why it is useful to write a unique meta description for each page.

Helpful content: what does Google prefer?

According to Google's guide to helpful content, its automated ranking systems are designed to prioritize helpful, reliable information created to benefit people, not to gain positions in search.

To evaluate content, Google suggests the "Who, How, and Why" questions:

  • Who? Who created the content?
  • How? How was the content produced?
  • Why? Why was the content created — to help people, or only to take a position in search?

In practice, this means your service page should answer customers' real questions: what the service consists of, how it works and how to contact you.

Summary

  • SEO is about helping search engines better understand your content; there is no "secret" to automatic first place.
  • Google works in three stages: crawling, indexing and serving results; no stage is guaranteed.
  • A sitemap provides information about your pages but does not guarantee indexing; robots.txt is not for hiding a page.
  • Write a short, descriptive title and a unique meta description for every page.
  • Create content that is helpful for people, not for the search engine.
